I’m the lead software architect for a mid-size transportation company traded on the NYSE and for the past eight years have run the small technology consulting firm Xtensible Solutions. As an architect and through my research I help provide direction for technology related investments whether it is for internal enterprise IT investments, allocating resources for building a software solution, or selecting stocks.
Why Inflection Research
I want to help companies and investors understand and use technology. Technology innovation is not linear; it is important to understand and anticipate the inflection points. I don’t just follow the trend lines. I focus on helping people understand the major inflection points and how to exploit these opportunities.
Investing in best of breed technology is not a long-term investment strategy; it is a trading strategy. Staying best of breed is only sustainable for companies that have externalities beyond technology leadership. The modern technology landscape has been defined by companies able to build these externalities (typically through platform leadership) and companies able to dislodge the status quo through disruptive innovation.
Bridging Technology & Business Strategy
There is a need for solution and enterprise architects with real world experience to provide analysis on marketplaces affected by technology for a business audience. I often find myself bridging the communication gap between the strategic business thinkers and technology experts. There is a dearth of technology experts crossing the chasm into business and investment strategy. Inflection Research was created to fill this void.
Currently much of the technology investment world is dominated by buzzword-analysts with little domain expertise resulting in too many: analysts offering opinions on technology they do not understand; decision makers or media channels seeking technology opinions from un-qualified experts; and buzzword architects and consultants helping set technology strategy. In addition, the myth that there are technology companies and non-technology companies is evaporating.
